Meghalaya is spread over an area of about 22,500 square kilometres and the population is about 32 lakh 11 thousand. The traditional dress of Meghalaya, which is for men, is called long cloth and for women, it is called Jainsen. Meghalaya also has its own famous festival named Nongkrem Dance.

Meghalaya is one of the 8 states of North East India and at this place, the highest rainfall in the world is recorded. If you are planning a trip to Meghalaya, then our suggestion is that the best time to visit Meghalaya is during the rainy season because at the same time almost all the waterfalls of Meghalaya are active and you will get to see very beautiful views everywhere. Now let’s talk about the map of Meghalaya.

Meghalaya is surrounded by 2 places, Assam located in its north, and Bangladesh located in the south of Meghalaya. Yes, Meghalaya also shares India’s international border. Now if we look at Meghalaya according to the tourist map, then we can divide Meghalaya into 3 parts. Because the whole of Meghalaya is divided into 3 hills

On the west side of Meghalaya located the Garo Hills, in its centre located the Khasi Hills, and in its east located the Jayanti Hills. In this blog, we will discuss only the tourist attractions of Khasi and Jayanti Hills.

We have made a separate blog for Garo Hills because you may have to make another trip to cover Garo Hills. Now let’s talk about Meghalaya’s top attractions and what kind of itinerary should we make.

So that we can cover all these top attractions. If you are planning to visit Meghalaya, then make an itinerary of about 5 to 6 days. In which you can cover Khasi Hills and Jayanti Hills. Your 5-day itinerary will look like this.

Itineraries Planning

So, let’s talk about Day 1.

To come to Meghalaya, you have to first come to Shillong. To reach Shillong, you will first reach Guwahati. Whether you come by flight or train. It will take you 3 hours to reach Shillong from Guwahati and you will reach Shillong almost after lunch. Your Day 1 will be in Shillong only.

Our suggestion is that you take a hotel in Police Bazar because Police Bazar is considered to be the city centre of Shillong and spending your first night in the Police Bazaar will be a great experience. The city centre of Shillong is the Police Bazaar. You will find the biggest shopping street in Shillong. In the Police Bazaar, you will get to eat all kinds of restaurants and all kinds of local food.

On the day you reach Shillong, you can spend the whole evening in the police Bazaar. If you want, you can also buy Souvenirs of Meghalaya for your home and a police bazaar is also a great place for shopping. It is our suggestion that night you should have dinner at the City Hut Family Dhaba of Police Bazaar.

City Hut Family Dhaba is a great place for Indian and Chinese food in Shillong. You must come to this place to have dinner with your family. If you are coming to visit Meghalaya and have stayed in Shillong, then you must visit Police Bazaar and if you have gone to Police Bazaar then have dinner at City Hut Family Dhaba.

The best thing here is the service here. The waiters here have very good customer handling. City hut family Dhaba will be located at Oakland Road Shillong and the cost of eating 1 person here is approximately 300 to 400 rupees.

The timing of City Hut Family Dhaba is 11 am to 9:30 pm.

Now, our Day 2 itinerary will look like this.

We will leave from Shillong for Cherrapunji. Any taxi will be ready to take you from Shillong to Cherrapunji from the centre point of the Police Bazar.

Your shared taxi can cost about 500 rupees. While going from Shillong to Cherrapunji, you can first stop at Duwan Sing Syiem View Point. Now we were going towards Cherrapunji, now we will not get the address of the resort or hotel or not. We have just crossed Duwan Sing Syiem Bridge.

You must be seeing this bridge behind me; it is a very beautiful bridge. I won’t see it as the main attraction but is one of the very best attractions and next to it is Duwan Sing Syiem View Point. There is a very nice small market in front of this.

Maggi points and shopping carts are open. Let me show you this market. When you leave Shillong for Cherrapunji, the Duwan Sing Syiem Bridge is located on the way. Yes, this is the famous place in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya where every tourist definitely stops for about 5 minutes.

Here you will see a small picnic spot to spend time with friends and family. Where you can buy Souvenirs and take a break of 10 to 15 minutes to eat. Next to this bridge is Duwan Sing Syiem Viewpoint.

Due to this, you have to go down a few steps and you will reach to see another beautiful viewpoint of Meghalaya. So, if you are covering Meghalaya, then you must also cover Duwan Sing Syiem Bridge on the way. It’s indeed a beautiful market. There is a cafeteria, you can see Meggie’s cafeteria type at the back.

Many people are sitting here. It’s very nice weather. It will be a lot of fun at this time to eat Maggi while sitting outside. Now, moving forward your second destination will be Dainthlen Falls. The next place to visit in Meghalaya is Dainthlen Falls.

Dainthlen Falls in Sohra which we also know as Cherrapunji and this fall is 80 meters deep, which means the water falls down to 80 meters. The best way to cover this fall is by foot. You come by car, scooter or taxi and there is a parking space of 20 rupees and you can cover these places by parking it.

There are some precautions to cover this place. Always stay away from railings. It is made of such a railing; you can even fall and die by going near it. So, always keep the precaution this thing. It may take you around 30 minutes to 1 hour to cover this place and if the weather is good and you feel good, then you can also spend 2 hours. Dainthlen Falls is a straight waterdrop fall 80 meters high.

Whenever we see a waterfall, we see water falling from below. But the speciality of Dainthlen Waterfalls is that you will see this waterfall from where the water starts. Yes, standing on the top of the waterfall and watching the waterfall fall down is something else. The story of this place is very famous, it is believed that this is the place where the people of Sohra had a fierce fight with a demon.

There was a very big serpent coming here and was creating a lot of ruckuses, here they had a fight and had driven him away from here. This is a famous story here.

Dainthlen Waterfalls is Open from Sunrise to Sunset although there is no entry fee here, if you are coming here by scooty or car, then you will have to pay 20 or 30 rupees for parking.

There is no fee to visit Dainthlen Falls and there is no timing for coming here, you can come anytime. Just don’t come at night because it is very dangerous. Otherwise, the best time to visit here is either early morning or evening.

The Wah- Kaba Falls is located near the Dainthlen Falls. So, you can cover that too on the same day. Now if we talk about Meghalaya, then we will definitely talk about falls. Cherrapunji is the place where the highest number of falls is located in Meghalaya. While coming from Shillong to Cherrapunji, there is a Wah-Kaba Falls in the middle.

You may also trek for a while by road to reach Kaba Falls. You may also have to trek by road to reach Wah-Kaba Falls for a while. Even during that trekking, you can see a lot of great views. Wah-Kaba Falls is about 180 meters high. And this is a great gem from Khasi Hills. The best time to visit Wah-Kaba Falls is during the rainy season and this is open from 6 am to 5 pm.

After that, you can eat unlimited food as much as you want. But can’t share and we have taken a token of a thali, now we will give this token there and start eating. So, this is our thali. They just told me what is in this.

It has sabzi, Gujarati curry, gobi sabzi, rasam, dal, salad, and rajma. It has got a papad with it and it is something in desserts. Chappati and rice take as much as you want. Since the sunset in Meghalaya is very early, after lunch, you will get only 2 hours to cover the remaining places there. So, first, you will go to Seven Sisters Falls.

Guys, the next place we have come to see is the Seven Sisters Waterfalls. Seven Sister Waterfall is named Seven Sister Waterfall because there are 7 waterfalls lined up together. Seven Sister Waterfalls is also named Nohsangithaiang Waterfalls and its height from where it falls from top to bottom is about 315 meters. Yes, from here the waterfalls are 315 meters down.

After Mawlynnong Village, we will now reach Dawki River.

Now we will walk on the Dawki River whose water is crystal clear. It is not so clear right now, but it is very clear in December. But let’s go boating there. Let’s go. Where is the border? Border? Near the blackboard, Okay. So, it’s all Bangladeshi? Yes, Bangladeshi tourists. Oh, this is the board, this is the border.

This is the border. Okay. Dawki Lake is also very famous by the name of Crystal-Clear River Water Lake. There comes a time in the year when the water of Dawki Lake is crystal clear. That is, you can also see its floor while boating on it.

Even while boating in this lake, you can also see fishes, snakes, and different animals living in the water. Boating on Dawki Lake will cost you 500 rupees per person and this boating will roam you for approximately 30 minutes.

The other special thing about Dawki Lake is that the lake is in India and half is in Bangladesh and while boating here, you will actually be standing right next to the Bangladesh border and not only this, but you will also see tourists from Bangladesh boating in front of you

However, you cannot cross this border. Because there are posts of CRPF here. They obviously won’t let you cross the border. Dawki Lake opens at 6 am and it can take you about 2 to 3 hours to roam here. There is no fee for visiting Dawki Lake, but there are boating charges which are 500 rupees per person.

They have shown us the border of Bangladesh where they are clicking photos for 20 rupees. I said click. Let me stand here. This is the border of Bangladesh. I can’t go this way.

After visiting the Dawki River you can also see the Indo-Bangladesh border before going to your camp. I have come very close to the India-Bangladesh border. This is the border just in front of me, let me show you now. I met the army men behind me, they said yes you can go. You can also click the photo and if you want, you can also go to Bangla, there is no problem. India Bangladesh Matri Dwar is written on it. You are seeing behind me that you can go here only with permits.

My bag is kept on the bike so I can’t go very far but let’s try and see how far I can go. What you are seeing in front of me, is the end of India. There it is written Welcome to Bangladesh. You will find the Indo-Bangladesh border at Dawki in Meghalaya, just a short distance from Dawki Lake. Where tourists can go to see the border. Where you will see the last milestone of India.

There is nothing special to see on Dawki’s Indo-Bangladesh border. But this excitement that you are standing on the border of India, you will get to see it at this place.
